Artist Statement
This collaborative project proposes an AI-assisted tool for illustrators and world-builders that supports character development through dialogue, note-taking, sketching, and visual organization. It grew out of a problem we repeatedly noticed in studio: many people can create an interesting character or image, but struggle to expand that fragment into a larger story or a more complete world. We may know what a character looks like, or have a rough sense of their personality, but it is often difficult to build the relationships, emotions, setting, and narrative structure that make that character feel fully alive. This tool is designed to support that process.
The system begins with an uploaded drawing of a character, whether it is finished, partial, or still rough. The AI reads visual cues such as clothing, posture, expression, atmosphere, and objects, and uses them to form a provisional interpretation of the character. This interpretation is not treated as a fixed truth, but as a starting point. From there, the user can enter into a dialogue with the character, asking questions, testing ideas, correcting misreadings, and discovering new possibilities. During this conversation, the user can also save notes, collect fragments, and gradually build a richer understanding of the character’s motivations, fears, relationships, symbolic meaning, and surrounding world.
These materials are then reorganized into a visual thinking space. Ideas, questions, dialogue fragments, and world-building elements become movable tabs on an infinite canvas, where the user can group, connect, and rearrange them. Sketches can also be added to the same canvas, allowing the project to move back and forth between text, image, and reflection. In this workflow, AI does not replace drawing. Instead, it supports interpretation, speculation, and iterative development, helping the artist deepen a visual idea without automating the final image.
Our critical position is that AI should not function as a shortcut that turns illustration into instant output. Many image-generation systems compress the distance between thought and result, leaving little room for uncertainty, revision, or discovery. This project argues for a different role: AI as a speculative partner that helps artists think through characters and worlds while preserving authorship, ambiguity, and visual decision-making. The goal of the tool is not to produce illustrations for the user, but to create a structure in which the artist can ask better questions, encounter unexpected interpretations, and develop richer narrative possibilities through their own practice.
Technically, the project engages AI through image interpretation, conversation, organizational restructuring, and iterative feedback between sketches and concepts. Its development also reflects experimentation and revision. Our initial interest was in using AI to bring a drawn character to life and generate further possibilities, but over time the project became more focused on how AI might support thought rather than dominate form. That shift helped clarify both the technical direction of the system and our position as makers.
Ultimately, this project proposes AI as a tool for expanding imagination rather than replacing creative labor. The finished work includes not only the system itself, but also the evolving drawings, notes, and world-building structures that emerge through it. In that sense, the project is both a functional tool and a statement about what illustration can remain: authored, exploratory, and open-ended.
Workflow
The workflow below shows the full process from the initial uploaded character to the final selection of a developed visual direction. Each step is designed to be clear, sequential, and easy to follow.
Upload an Existing Character
The user begins by uploading an already drawn character. This image becomes the starting point of the process.
- The upload can be a finished character design, a partial design, or a rough but recognizable sketch.
- The purpose is to give the system an existing visual base rather than starting from text alone.
AI Interprets the Character
Once the image is uploaded, the AI analyzes the visual information in the drawing.
- It looks at appearance, clothing, posture, expression, objects, and atmosphere.
- From these cues, it builds a provisional interpretation of the character.
AI Forms a Provisional Setup
Based on the visual reading, the AI generates an initial character setup.
- This setup may include possible personality traits, emotional tone, background hints, worldbuilding clues, and speculative narrative context.
- These are not final facts. They function as starting assumptions for further development.
Immediate Dialogue with the Character
The system opens a dialogue interface right away, allowing the user to talk with the character from the start.
- The conversation is grounded in the uploaded drawing, the AI’s interpretation, and the provisional setup.
- The character may respond with a possible voice, attitude, or emotional state.
User Refines the Character Through Conversation
As the dialogue continues, the user can question, test, correct, and expand the AI’s assumptions.
- The user may explore personality, motivations, fears, relationships, habits, backstory, setting, world rules, and symbolic meaning.
- This stage turns a visually suggestive figure into a more developed character.
Note-Taking During the Dialogue
While talking with the character, the user can record notes at any moment.
- These notes may capture traits, worldbuilding ideas, story fragments, visual motifs, contradictions, or promising directions.
- This creates a bridge between conversation and later visual development.
AI Organizes the Conversation and Notes
After enough material is gathered, the AI reorganizes the dialogue and notes into a clearer structure.
- It extracts core traits, emotional logic, backstory elements, worldbuilding components, themes, and visual opportunities.
- It can also suggest alternative directions, scenario ideas, and follow-up questions.
Ideas Become Draggable Tabs on an Infinite Canvas
The organized ideas are transformed into draggable tabs on an infinite canvas.
- These tabs can include keywords, dialogue excerpts, character traits, questions, narrative fragments, and worldbuilding elements.
- The user can move, group, connect, and rearrange them freely, turning the process into a visual thinking space.
Sketch Development and Iterative Feedback
The user uploads sketches onto the same canvas, and the AI responds again by analyzing the new drawings and asking further questions.
- The canvas now holds both text-based ideas and image-based sketch explorations.
- This helps the user compare visual directions, rethink unclear choices, and build stronger consistency between character and world.
Selection Mode
Once multiple sketch directions have been developed, the user can enter selection mode and decide which version should move forward.
- The user compares which version best fits the character, has the strongest visual potential, and best supports the worldbuilding.
- The chosen sketch then becomes the basis for the final illustration.
